I am glad that you are considering Scouting for your child, and I thank you for accessing this website for more information.  I wanted to take a moment to provide you with personal observations on why Scouting is important, relevant and necessary in today's world.

Like the vast majority of adult leaders that you will come into contact with over the next several years, I am a volunteer.  I joined Scouting as a leader when my youngest son became a Cub Scout; and I hope that you will consider supporting the Scouts with your talent when your child joins.  As a professional contractor supporting Military Operations, I can state with conviction that the leadership training and life skills learning that your Scout will experience from an early age will help them to be better adults, will prepare them for success in school and their careers and will give them an advantage in virtually every area of their lives.  In my career, I send people to take a week of leadership training costs several thousands of dollars -- and that training comes no where close to the leadership training received by a Scout over the entire span of their pre-teen and teenage years.

This type of leadership and skills training is available to boys and young men through Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, as well as for young women and young men in the Venturing program.  Scouting provides a high return on the investment of time for your child, for you and for your community.

A parent of a Cub Scout in our community provided a simple explanation for why his children are in Scouting, and I believe it is one of the best reasons I've ever heard.  When I asked why he had his children in Scouting, especially when they are so active in sports programs each season, he told me:

"My wife and I made Scouts a pre-requisite for being in sports.  There are no role models in sports today.  Children don't learn about values, or character or integrity in sports anymore.  We knew they would learn these skills and characteristics in Scouts."

If you have any questions about the process of joining Scouting, I encourage you to find a unit near your home. The leaders there will be more than happy to assist you.

How to Join Scouting


Joining Scouts is easy if you follow these simple steps:

Locate a Unit

• We have units throughout Northern Fayetteville, Spring Lake and Ft. Bragg.  If you know which unit you are interested in joining, contact the Cubmaster, Scoutmaster or Venture Crew Advisor directly to begin the enrollment process.
• If you are new to the area, and are not sure where a unit is that is convenient for you and your child, or you would like more information about the types of units in your area or you need help locating a contact, click here to send an e-mail inquiry and we will respond promptly.

Visit the Unit

• Ask:
  • Where the unit meets
  • When the unit meets
  • How frequently they meet
  • What are the enrollment costs (they differ from unit to unit)
  • What paperwork to fill out
  • How you as and adult can get involved with the youth!

Enroll

• Fill out the paperwork (Youth and / or Adult Application)
• Return the paperwork and fees to Unit Leader

Start Having FUN!


Your Unit leader is responsible for turning in the appropriate copies with fees to the council office for you.  Shortly thereafter you will receive a membership card and Boys' Life (if applicable)
